300 members of the Spartan Band is one of the band's oldest and most recognized university marching in the country. The band was founded in 1870 as the 10-member student group, and since then has grown to become one of the premiere college bands in the country.

When MSU began to play football the Big 10 Conference in 1952, the band received the first green and white uniforms. 10. Spartan Band is the 1988 recipient of the Louis Sudler Trophy for alumni marching bands, managed by John Philip Sousa Foundation.
